Clarence Gatson Collection

This collection contains photos from the personal archive of San Francisco photojournalist Clarence Gatson. From 1975 until his untimely passing in 1992, Mr. Gatson served as photographer and production manager for the Sun Reporter, the paper-of-record for the San Francisco Bay Area’s African-American community. The collection has strong coverage of entertainment and fashion. Mr. Gatson was deeply involved in the Los Angeles entertainment scene, and his photos include candid shots of Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and countless other entertainers, many of whom he knew personally.

Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music consists of over 29,000 pieces of American popular music. The collection spans the years 1780 to 1980, but its strength is its thorough documentation of nineteenth-century America through popular music. Thousands of scores from the collection include striking color lithographs on their covers. Because color lithography predated photography, this collection includes some of the only graphic resources we have to illustrate nineteenth-century America.

Stuart Lutz Collection

Stuart Lutz, a respected authority on autographs and letters, has spent years collecting photographs, ephemera, documents and other artifacts related to the Vietnam War, with a goal of creating the largest private Vietnam War collection in the world. His collection includes rare photographs of leaders like Ho Chi Minh, hundreds of snapshots from soldiers in the field, and images of entertainers like Bob Hope, as well as buttons, posters, signs and other ephemera from the homefront, representing both pro-war and anti-war perspectives.

Elizabeth Morse Collection

Held by collector Elizabeth Morse, the Morse Collection includes thousands of travel and reportage images shot on Kodachrome film from the 1940s to the 1980s. Ms. Morse–an accountant by trade–has exhaustively researched her collection. Each image includes detailed metadata, with provenance data also available. The Rex Brandt Sketchbooks

This collection from the Laguna College of Art + Design includes images from the sketchbooks of American watercolorist Rex Brandt. Remembered as one of the founders of the California Watercolor movement, Brandt painted vivid landscapes across the world from the mid 1930s through the 1990s, gaining international recognition. Known as a gifted landscape painter, many of Brandt’s most compelling images feature vistas from his travels through Europe.
